Shopping in Oxford
Shop in the Covered Market – there are plenty goodies
to choose from.
Oxford has probably had a market since at least the late 9th
century, but the first written reference is found in 12th-century
records. Oxford market started at Carfax and quickly spread along
adjoining streets.
Created as a replacement for what had, by 1772, become the sprawling
development of street market stalls with medieval origins, the
Oxford Covered Market was officially opened two years later.
Today, it houses numerous traders selling an amazing variety
of goods – fresh fruit, vegetables, breads & cakes,
meats, cheeses, seafood, fine foods, flowers, leather goods, jewellery,
clothing, gifts – the mix creates a wonderful atmosphere.
As with many a market, its sights and smells are part of the
experience. It may be the smell of freshly-ground coffee or perhaps
the attractive displays of flowers or fruit.
